old – haibun

She looked hazed at the drawer in front of her, trying to remember what she came to look for in the first place. “What on earth am I doing here?!…” Then she saw a photo of herself younger, when her hair was still of a raven black and her cheeks still lacked of wrinkles. She picked it up with her now trembling gnarled fingers and smiled. Back then her memory would have never failed her. It seemed like only yesterday…how time had flown!…With the corner of her eye she noticed a small box. “Ah! There it is!” she exclaimed with a radiant face, recalling all of a sudden the reason why she was there. She smiled again tenderly to the old photo and put it back, then took the box and closed the drawer.

age will teach us all
that forgetting’s not a sin
but a prank of time

Yes, a prank. 🙂 This is so in your face, I love it. And the way you create this moment in time and knit things up in a tender moment is touching.

  3. Beautiful energy and sensitivity in your prose and the haiku swings a powerful idea on the concept of “prank”!

And it is not a very nice prank either 😀
I like the direction you took this, and the inspirational message attached to it. Very nicely done, Lily! Thank you for giving me a smile, and making me feel better about my forgetfulness! I needed that boost!

Forgetting, then fondly remembering something altogether different was a real gift here. Wonderful how that happens to us old folks!

Very creatively done…I like the twist of old age…though I must say, if you keep on writing, you keep your memories ~

Wonderful and so true! I walked into the kitchen four times yesterday and each time I completely forgot why I was there. I finally turned around grabbed a pen and went back and sat down in the living room. No sooner did I sit down then I remembered what I needed in the kitchen, so I wrote it on my hand and went back into the kitchen. I grabbed what I needed then ate my apple and toast and then wondered why the heck I’d written apple and toast on my hand. LOL!! It’s heck getting old, but it’s also a lot of fun.
    Blessings!
